Batur is a two-hour climb in the dark for sunrise over its crater lake. Etna asks for a guide above the cable car and a warm layer even in July. La Palma’s Tajogaite cone still steams in places after its 2021 eruption.

Everest Base Camp
Base camp at 5,364 m is a tent city in spring, not a summit. The walk in from Lukla takes about eight days up and four down, with rest days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche so the body can keep pace with the altitude. The view of Everest itself comes from Kala Patthar, the rocky hill above Gorak Shep.

The Levada Paths
Levadas are irrigation channels cut into Madeira’s mountainsides from the fifteenth century onward, carrying water from the wet north to the farms of the south. The maintenance paths beside them run for more than 2,000 km, almost level, through laurel forest that UNESCO lists as World Heritage.

The Great Wall on Foot
Jinshanling is a Ming-era stretch about two and a half hours from Beijing, partly restored and partly left as crumbling watchtowers. Walking it means steep stairs, few vendors and far fewer people than Badaling, with the wall running away over the ridges in both directions.
